2011 Crete Vacations Information

Christmas and New Year 2011 are weeks away yet, but if you haven't yet started thinking about next year's family vacation, this is a good time to do so.

If you are investigating different destinations, you are already ahead of the game. Either way, it will be worth your while to give serious consideration to making Crete that destination for a 2011 summer holiday.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and covers more than 3,000 square miles. So you can holiday in Crete several times and still stay in an area that you have never visited before. Moreover, the island is 160 miles long and varies from 8 to 35 miles in width. No matter where you stay, you are not far from ocean. Most people take their holidays within walking distance of the endless sandy beaches.

Crete is, of course, steeped in a rich and varied culture and history. With little effort on your part, some of that history and culture will be absorbed during your holiday. It is a delightful bonus of spending time on the island. But frankly speaking, most people who are contemplating where to spend their holidays are primarily interested in the hotels, the beaches and the food. For exactly those reasons, you should take a close look at what's on offer for 2011 Crete holidays and add it to your shortlist perhaps.

For those who act quickly, the entire range of hotels can be reserved at good discounts. From hostels to high end hotels to villas, discounts are available. Hostels, which appeal to young tourists and the more adventurous older tourists, can be reserved with a 5 to 7 euros per night discount. Most hotels in the moderate price range are offering 7 to 10 percent per night discounts. At some establishments, you can stay seven nights for the price of six. The high end hotels are offering as much as 12.5 percent discounts per night. With a little intensive investigation, you may even find better deals than these mentioned.

Villas are also being offered at discounts of about 10 to 12 percent per night. This is where you can see some really interesting savings, particularly if you have a large group and are planning on sharing expenses. Many five and six bedroom villas are available.

Villas are quite attractive because many of them are in prime locations - close to towns and sandy beaches. They also feature lovely pools and stunning patio views.

Virtually every town in which you find yourself, taverns and restaurants abound with delicious local fare. Obviously there is a distinct Mediterranean influence in most of the local cuisine. But like the rest of the world, other cultural cuisines can be found as well.

If sunshiny, lazy days by the seashore appeals to you, give Crete a good look and take advantage of the discounts that can be had. The only recommendation is that you must act quickly to reserve your dream holiday. As you get closer to the 2011 festive holiday, fewer discounts will be available online and at your local travel agent.

Kids Show Off Their Karate Skills -- By Breaking Boards

Are you interested in helping your child gain more self-confidence?
How about teaching them the importance of goal setting skills & determination?
Local martial arts school owner Javier Lozano, Jr. created a great program designed to help children gain confidence, learn determination, display laser-like focus… all while having fun in Karate.
The Dojo of Karate & Fitness will be hosting their Annual Board Breaking Seminar this month on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
Students of The Dojo of Karate will have an opportunity to break 10 boards with various techniques, such as hammer fist strikes, palm heel strikes, stomps, side kicks, and many more.
Last year, Sensei Lozano showed off the skill of breaking a board… over his head.
And, for the first time this year, Mr. Lozano will be allowing children in the community that are non-students of The Dojo of Karate to come by and break a board… and no experience is necessary.
Sound scary…?
It really isn’t.
Last year, The Dojo of Karate was featured on Fox 31 News: Good Day Colorado with Dan Daru. All of the students that participated in the live filming of the morning show broke boards for the very first time and were very successful in their attempts to break boards on live television. Many of these students had trained for less then 6 months, while others were nearing the 1 year mark.
And, though our school may not be featured on another news station this year, children interested in learning more about Karate will have a chance to actually test their skills against a board, while being coached by a 3rd degree black belt with over 20 years of training experience, and 17 plus years of teaching knowledge – Sensei Lozano.
“What I truly enjoy about the board breaking seminars we host at The Dojo of Karate is how much confidence our students begin to gain after they start breaking 1 or 2 boards” says Lozano. “They finally realize that it’s really not that bad, and all of a sudden they are trying to break 2 or 3 boards at a time. Their confidence begins to sore. And, if they fail, they continue to try. It’s just awesome to see our students display that focus and determination.”
The Dojo of Karate tries to host various events that gets the school together as a community. Several of the students and parents are friends outside of the dojo, and this allows them to interact with one another. Plus, it allows for the parents to actually come onto the floor and watch their child do some amazing stuff. A great way to simply capture the moment.
The Dojo of Karate has been offering martial arts training for kids, teens, and adults, women self-defense classes, and fitness boot camps since 2008.
Kids can start taking Karate as young as 4.5 years old, as they offer different programs for age groups.
The school is located in the Safeway Shopping Center on the northeast corner of 128th Avenue and Zuni Street, in Westminster/Broomfield.

Which is Better? Hybrid Irons or Regular Irons

TaylorMade Rescue was one of the first to utilize the hybrid style of club-making. It was originally intended to 'rescue' the ball from a tough spot. It was designed to give the ball maximum lift to get it out of a constrained space. This concept is now in use by the modern hybrid clubs. Ever since their use, people have been rapidly switching over to the hybrid clubs. To know about the differences between the regular irons and hybrid irons, you need to know the kinds of clubs out there and where they are used.
  • The long irons are the 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-Irons.
  • The mid irons are the 5-, 6- and 7-Irons.
  • Short irons are the 8- and 9-Irons.
Hybrid irons are available in all the same numbers, so for every regular iron club, you get its hybrid counterpart. Hybrid irons fall under none of the regular golf club categories, so we need to classify them as a separate class.

Basic Information

Regular Irons

The regular irons are shorter than wood clubs. They are used for shots on the green and to hit angled shots to steer from trees and rise out of bunkers. Before the advent of the hybrid irons, regular irons were classified into cavity-back and muscle-back, depending on the club head.

Hybrid Irons

As per the CMC, hybrids are classified into two, as a utility club or as a hybrid iron-wood club. Hybrids are basically the new type of clubs, meant to take place of the regular iron clubs. They come in the same category as long irons and fairway woods. They can also replace the wedges.

Hybrid Irons Vs. Regular Irons

A hybrid iron is designed to near-perfection, meant to do what the regular clubs failed to do. Find out the areas where the hybrid fares better than the regular.

Structure
  • The club shaft on the hybrid iron is shorter than that on the regular iron. This gives the user a lot more control over the club, giving you the ease to get the right swing.
  • The club head is larger on a hybrid than a regular iron. This gives a larger area on the club head to hit the ball with, giving a more deeper contact during the shot. It also gives the user more room for error. The face of the club is also slightly more convex than a regular iron head.
Material Used
  • Club shafts are made of different materials. The hybrid club is made of graphite or a stainless steel alloy. Both give the shaft a useful amount of flex and smoothness. Great care is taken to ensure the right kind of shaft making.
  • Club heads are sometimes made of the same material as the regular irons. They are either hollow steel or titanium cased. An alloy that gives the head more weight is mostly used. The weight of the club head in a hybrid is much more than a regular iron. This means two things; the weight on the end of the very flexible shaft gives the user immense control (comparatively) on the launch angle of the ball; the low center of gravity due to the extra weight further adds to a greater launch angle on the ball, as well as adding to the forgiveness.
Usability
The friendliness of a golf club with the golfer depends on two things; the moment of inertia of the club and the ease with which the ball covers its distances.
  • The moment of inertia of the club decides the magnitude and cleanliness of impact of the head with the ball. The lower the moment of inertia of the club, the more crude the manner of it hitting the ball. This means there is a high chance of slicing the shot, making the ball go in a direction you didn't want it to. A higher moment of inertia means a good, clean and smooth hit on the ball, making it travel exactly the way you want it to.
  • The sweetest part of using a hybrid is its ability to hit the ball farther than a regular iron. If the same golfer takes a shot using a regular iron and a hybrid iron of the same number, he/she will find that the ball will travel around 15 to 17 yards farther on the hybrid than on the regular. So you get a bonus 15 yards on the same level of skill and energy!
It is now pretty much certain that hybrid clubs are better than regular irons, but that will eventually depend on an individual's style. Regular irons, being longer, can give a better speed while hitting the ball. If someone is used to a regular, he/she will take some time to adjust to a hybrid set. So, if you're a beginner, start on hybrids, and if you're professional, stick to the regulars.

List of Basketball Equipment with Pictures

efore we pump up our boots and get ready for a fast-paced game of basketball, let us know a little bit about the history of basketball. Basketball was the brainchild of James Naismith. He was born in Almonte, Ontario and was a Canadian physical education instructor. When Naismith was an instructor at the Springfield College (Massachusetts), with the help of American physical education specialist, he invented the game basketball in 1891. Over the century, rules of basketball have undergone a lot of change. Today, high school, college and professional basketball, all are played in a similar fashion. The difference lies between the length and the range of basic skills. There are five players in each team and they play the game with a single ball. The aim is to shoot the maximum number of baskets in the hoop and win the game. We shall have a look at the list of basketball equipment with pictures in the following paragraphs and know the requirements to play this game better.

List of Basketball Equipment

Basketball is one of the most popular games around the world. If one has a basketball and a hoop, they can play this game indoors as well as outdoors. If one is a professional, they will definitely need most of the equipment to practice. But, if one is just starting out and learning a few tricks of the trade, then the basic necessities will suffice their needs.

Basketball Training Equipment

Basketball Equipment The Ball
The most important thing for training is a ball. Without a ball, one cannot possibly practice basketball. There are certain guidelines which one needs to follow when buying a basketball. For practicing, one can play with a rubber ball. For professional competitions, one needs to use an inflated ball made of leather. Official size of a basketball is 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men's game and 28.5 inches in circumference for women's game. It should weigh 18 to 22 ounces. When bounced off 6 feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54 inches in height.
Basketball Equipment Shoes
One needs specialized shoes when playing basketball. It should be able to give better support to the ankle as compared to running shoes. The basketball shoes should be high-tipped shoes and provide extra comfort during a game. These shoes are specially designed to maintain high traction on the basketball court.

Basketball Shooting Equipment

Basketball Equipment The Hoop
The hoop or basket is a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is attached to a net and helps one score a point. The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the baseline and 10 feet above the court.
Basketball Equipment Basketball Court
The basketball court is the next important thing for shooting balls in this game. The court is usually made of wooden floorboard. The court size is about 28m x 17m according to the International standards. The National Basketball Association (NBA) regulation states the floor dimension as 29m x 15m. The standard court is rectangular in shape and has baskets placed on opposite ends.
Basketball Equipment Backboard
The backboard is the rectangular board that is placed behind the rim. It helps give better rebound to the ball. The backboard is about 1800mm in size horizontally and 1050mm vertically. Many times, backboards are made of acrylic, aluminum, steel or glass.

Basketball Coaching Equipment

Basketball Equipment Uniforms
When one starts coaching a basketball team, the most important requirement for a team is to have a uniform. This helps one differentiate teams from one another. A uniform consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts, numbers on the front and back of the shirts for identification.

Basketball Equipment
Shot Clock
The offense is allowed a maximum of 24 seconds to have a ball in hand before shooting. These 24 seconds are counted on the shot clock. If the offense fails to shoot a ball that hits the rim, they will lose the possession of the ball to the other team.

Basketball Equipment
Whistle
The coach or referee uses a whistle to indicate the start or end of a game. S/he can even use the whistle to stop the play in the middle of a game. Whistle also helps to indicate fouls, timeout, or out of bound balls to the players. In order to get the attention of the players, many times coaches use the whistle to gather the players.

This was the total list of basketball equipment required for a game. It does not matter if one does not have every object mentioned in the basketball equipment list above. All that is needed is a hoop, basketball and proper shoes to practice the game. Hope the above information is helpful to those who are trying to hone their raw talent for a professional career.

Who Will Win the 2011 US Open?

Let's face it. Novak Djokovic has had a dream 2011 so far, and is by far the most likely player to go home with the 2011 US Open title. Losing just two matches till date this year, one in a semi-final to Roger Federer, and the other in a final due to injury, Djokovic has had a near perfect year. And it's not over yet. With the US Open and the ATP World Tour Finals to play for, not to mention the Masters events, Djokovic has a lot to play for, in spite of his number 1 ranking not being at any immediate risk.

Finally achieving his dream of becoming the top ranked player in the sport, Novak Djokovic is just starting to show his dominance on the court. Previously labeled as a five-set quitter, and as someone who withdrew from way too many matches when on the losing side, the Novak we know has come a long way indeed. Reminding me of the once unconquerable Nadal, today's Djokovic seems to have the strength and determination to eclipse all the others before him. With 9 titles under his belt already, he is surely on the way, and in what fashion. Holding the Australian Open and the Wimbledon titles already this year, Djokovic is looking to do what Nadal and Federer have been doing for the past few years, holding 3 of the four grand slam titles in a year. Surprisingly, that should have already happened, save for an {unfortunate?} loss to Roger Federer in the French Open semifinals. However, from what can be seen on court, the US Open already looks to be in the Djoker's pocket. Or is it...

Can greats like Nadal and Federer actually be written off? While Nadal and Federer both lost early in both the warm up tournaments, more interesting was the fact that Novak Djokovic withdrew, that's right withdrew, from the FINALS of the Cincinnati Open, citing a shoulder injury. What needs to be asked, of course, is how serious the injury is. No doubt Nadal and Federer are rusty, but they have always proved that they have it in them when it comes to playing the Grand Slams. Federer has 16 titles, and Nadal is fast catching up. Will Novak Djokovic, the new star on the block, be able to retain the form that saw him demolish, no, annihilate, the competition thus far? Or will the shoulder injury be more telling and saddle him with even more pressure to keep his amazing golden year going? Remember, Novak himself claimed that the injury was present for a few weeks, and was caused due to over-activity, and the grueling tennis season. Of course, the fact that he has lost just 2 matches so far means that he has played more [reaching the final and winning in most tournaments] than the average player on the tour, and is consequently more tired and fatigued. But the most important point to take note of is the fact that the injury reached an extent to where he had to withdraw from a FINAL, that too a mere 8 days before one of the most demanding Grand Slams of the year. Are these 8 days enough for him to recover back to the form that we have been seeing from him since December last year? Or are we going to see a 75% recovered Djokovic struggling at nearly the end of the season. For if that is the case, then it will be a shame, because no one deserves the US Open title more than Novak Djokovic.

So that brings us to the question that is on everyone's mind, as to who will win the 2011 US Open? Will the brilliance of Roger Federer, a 5-time champion, or the tenacity and doggedness of Rafael Nadal, the defending champion, make a difference in the 2011 US Open outcome. Or will the Djoker have the last laugh after all...
Who will win the 2011 US Open?
Novak Djokovic
Rafael Nadal
Roger Federer
Andy Murray
None of the Above

US Open 2011 Dates

For tennis fans, the month of August couldn't be more exciting. This is because the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open takes place in the last week of August. After a break of nearly 2 months, the top players in the world get ready to face off for the final Grand Slam of the year. With 3 of the 4 Grand Slams already done and dusted, the US Open is a final chance for those looking to win a Grand Slam in this calendar year.

When is the US Open 2011?

The US Open, being the last Grand Slam of the year, is played in late August, usually in the last week of the month. In 2011, the US Open will be played from the 29th of August to the 11th of September at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Preceded by the prestigious Wimbledon, the US Open is the last of the four Grand Slam events in the calendar year, with the ATP World Tour Finals being the only other notable tournament following it. Due to it being late in the year, the US Open is often considered to be the most demanding Grand Slam of them all, but this is probably due to the fact that players have played the entire season and are obviously a little tired. Perhaps due to this fact, the US Open remains the only Grand Slam to feature tie-breaks even in the final set of the match [3rd set for women's, and 5th set for men's], thereby shortening some matches considerably.

Who Won the 2010 US Open?

The 2010 US Open was a keenly contested affair, and at the end of 2 weeks of intense tennis, it was Rafael Nadal who took home the title, defeating Novak Djokovic in the finals of the men's event, while it was Kim Clijsters who won the women's event, defeating Vera Zvonareva in an anti-climatic final. In the men's doubles, the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob, took the title, defeating Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in a keenly contested final, while in the women's doubles, it was Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova who defeated Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova to take home the title. Liezel Huber and Bob Bryan added another title to their kitty when they defeated Květa Peschke and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi to take home the mixed doubles title as well.

Who Will Win the 2011 US Open?

Though Rafael Nadal is the defending champion at the US Open, the 2011 title might well go to another player, and that is none other than Novak Djokovic. Playing an incredible season so far, the Serb has lost just two matches this year, one to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open, and the other to Andy Murray in the finals of the Cincinnati Open, where he withdrew due to a shoulder injury. Winning the Australian Open and the Wimbledon titles will give him the confidence he needs, and this should be the year where he wins his first US Open title. However, Nadal, Federer, Murray, and the others, cannot be counted out, and the road to victory and the championship will definitely not be a piece of cake for the Serbian.

Who will win the 2011 US Open in the women's event is slightly more difficult to predict, as the defending champion Kim Clijsters will unfortunately not be defending her title due to a stomach injury, leaving the field for the women wide open. Serena Williams, making a comeback post injury, won both the warm-up tournaments, and is looking like a good contender for the title. The women's top seed, Caroline Wozniacki, is also looking good, and 2011 might just be the year where she gets her maiden major title. Let's also not forget the likes of Vera Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova and Francesca Schiavone, who are all capable of taking home the trophy.

So lots of action coming from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the next two weeks, and it will be interesting to see how the 2011 US Open shapes up. To say the least, it should be an intense two weeks of top class tennis.

Diving Techniques while Snorkeling

I still remember my trip to the Lakshadweep Islands, which I'd taken many years ago. The clear skies, bright, hot days, white sand, aquamarine water, and of course the lazy hours spent floating on water, snorkeling with the tube in my mouth, peering down in fascination at the vividly colored flora. That was one of the best times, ever! Till my friend unknowingly touched some poisonous sea creature, and her leg was swollen for the rest of the trip. Which brings me to the most important part - what to do, and what not to do, while diving when snorkeling. Here are a few tips that I want to share with you, so that you don't suffer like my friend...

Important Diving Techniques while Snorkeling

Remember, the dangers faced while snorkeling are not very different from the dangers faced while scuba diving. Given below are a few techniques that you must follow when diving while snorkeling. They will keep you safe, and ensure that you have help at hand when you need it, in case of an emergency. They are all important, so don't ignore any of them.

# 1 Equalizing
This is one of the most important things to do while snorkeling. Our ears are extremely sensitive, and a slight increase in the pressure on on our eardrums, if not equalized, will cause serious damage. As soon as you start going into the water, make sure that you pinch your nose, and blow out gently but steadily, till you hear a popping sound in your ears. This indicates that the pressure has been equalized and your ears are safe for some time. Do this after descending every few feet, because the pressure increases very quickly as you go deeper.

# 2 Cleaning the Snorkel Tube
Cleaning the snorkel tube is equally important, because the tube tends to get clogged with water after sometime. So after regular intervals, when you feel that you are not being able to breathe as easily as before, go up to the surface of the water and blow out with your mouth, with the tube still in your mouth. Make sure that no water is left in the tube, or you may end up breathing in water when you are under, making you choke. If you think some water is left, take the tube out of your mouth and try draining the water out by inverting it, and blow again to be absolutely sure.

# 3 Using the Fins
Use the fins attached to your legs, to propel yourself under water more quickly and efficiently, and gain more distance downwards with minimum effort. The thing to remember is, the tube will fill up with water soon, so you do not want to waste much time in getting to the depth you want to. If you take too much time to get there, the time you get at that depth to actually observing the aquatic life, will reduce. This is really undesirable. Keep your body streamlined, and use the fins to your advantage, to cover more distance in less time.

# 4 Gauging the Depth and Distance
Gauging the depth and the distance before you dive is extremely important, if you do not want to land on the rocks and get your head smashed. Extremely important, is to dive in absolutely clear water. You should be able to see clearly for a few feet inside the water, in the area where you are planning to dive. Avoid diving in murky, unclear water, as you will not be able to see what is under the surface. You may also happen to land on some poisonous plants that are growing on the rocks, and harm yourself. Although when we look into the water, things appear closer than they are, for safety reasons, it is best to assume that they are not actually deeper than they appear to be. It's safer if you think you have only 4 feet of depth and actually have 5, rather than thinking you have 5 feet and actually have less. Plan the depth of your dive with utmost care!

# 5 Safety Stops
Taking regular safety stops while diving deep, is a safe and highly recommended practice. Take these stops, check your air supply, equalize your general neutral buoyancy, slow down your diving speed, make sure your diving gear and equipment is still tightly bound to you and functioning OK, that you have enough air to reach as deep as you want and still come up safely without running out of air midway, etc. It is always a good thing to plan the dive in such a way, that you surface with some air left.

# 6 Plan the Dive and Learn Basic Emergency Skills
Avoid going diving alone. Always go with a friend or a professional, and also keep someone informed about your location and your diving plan. Once there, plan your dive properly. What depth you want to explore, how much air you will require, when will you take your safety stops, how will you signal to your friend that you are doing OK underwater, and all the small details that are generally taken for granted and neglected. Also make sure you know basic skills like mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and a few other related skills.

Tips on Diving while Snorkeling

Take Diving Lessons
Do not, at any cost, skip the diving lessons that your instructor tells you that you have to attend. There is not much chance that you will know much about being a diver, or the correct diving techniques, unless you are a pro diver. So pay attention when he talks, and explains what exactly needs to be done.

Check the Weather
Listen to the weather updates, and keep yourself in the loop as to how the weather is going to be, for the duration you plan to snorkel. Keep an eye out for the tides, since they are really powerful and can take you along when you are attempting to dive. You may either be pulled further out to sea by the outgoing tides, or you may be swept onto the rocks with the incoming tides. Either way is not something you want to experience!

Keep Away from Sea Creatures
Do not touch the sea creatures that you come across, just because they look beautiful and pretty. Often, the most attractive ones are the most dangerous, and you may end up being bitten or poisoned. The friend I mentioned had some creature stuck onto her leg, and that part of her skin had to be scraped off under local anesthesia. Keep away from corals too.

Right Gear and Equipment
Although mentioned last, this point is equally important. Make sure that all your diving equipment is working properly, BEFORE you descend into the water, and that your diving gear is suitable for the type of diving you are planning on doing. Also, make sure you are comfortable using all the gear. I saw a guy dressed in shorts and a body hugging tee while going for diving, and laughing at all the others in the group for being overdressed in their wetsuits. Well, that was till the instructor gave him a earful, and sent him back to wear one himself.

Do make sure you follow all the tips and techniques mentioned above. Lastly, do not forget to be generous while applying sunscreen before you get into the water. Now just pick a place that is overflowing with flora and fauna, and enjoy your experience!

Speed Skating Rules and Regulations

The thrill of racing against a clock or against other racers in a serious competition to win, is like no other. Be it on land or on water, racing is a sport that tests your strategic skills and your physical prowess and how well they work together. Sometimes, the fastest racer is not always the winner and one sport that exhibits this speed anomaly is the sport of speed skating. With speed skating, skaters race along a track, either in pairs for the best time or a group of skaters race against each other, to see who crosses the finish line first. These two basic forms are called long track or speed skating and short track speed skating, respectively. Speed skating requires an excellent ice skating ability, physical strength and endurance, as well as mental fortitude and the brain smarts to beat the competition. For such a sport, having the right skating equipment is just one part. The right speed skating rules and principles have to be followed.

Short Track Speed Skating - Basics and Rules

Types of Races: Short track involves a pack start or a group competition. Here 4-6 skaters race to be the first person across the finish line. This type of race has a mass start, where all the skaters start from the starting line at the same time. Another type of short track skating is a relay race. A relay team of 4 members must compete in tandem, such that each skater of a team takes at least one round of the track. Instead of passing a baton, one teammate must tag the other to switch the chance. A race can be one of the following 3 distances: 500 meters (4.5 laps), 1,000 meters (9 laps) and 1,500 meters (13.5 laps).

Basic Race Rules: A race is divided into heats, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Competitors advance to the next round by the process of elimination, where the top two skaters in a round are declared the victors. Heats are the preliminary rounds. The skating track is oval shaped and is 111.12 m long, enclosed within a standard 60 m x 30 m ice rink. The corners of the track are marked by 7 plastic cones.

If a skater skates on the inside of the track, the distance becomes shorter and he/she has an advantage. That is why the starting positions of the skaters are decided by lots. The track must be skated in a counterclockwise manner. The official starter will fire a pistol into the air to start the race. The skaters are allowed one false start, more than 1 and they are disqualified. The skater in the lead has the right-of-way and can pass other skaters but must avoid collisions. A bell is rung at the start of the last lap, to alert the skaters.

Violations: Short track skating involves high skating speeds in a small circular track. Infractions that violate the rules, some by chance and some intentional, can occur. One such infraction is impeding. This means a skater can put himself/herself in another skater's way to slow the skater down or hamper their progress. Throwing a hand out, slowing down in a lane suddenly, tripping or pushing or touching are impeding acts. If one skater bumps into another, especially at a crucial time of strategy and the bumped skater lost his/her position, then the skater who bumped is disqualified (DQ) and the other advances to the next round. Even a slight touch can be viewed as an impeding act, as the touched skater can be thrown off balance. The skating referee decides whether a noted incident of touching is accidental or on purpose. If on purpose, the offending skater can be DQed.

Two infractions involving track etiquette, are:
  • Cross-tracking: It's an infraction where a skater from one skating lane, cuts off another skater while changing his/her lane. Hence the other skater will have to brake abruptly to avoid colliding with the cross-tracking skater or falling down.
  • Off-track: A skater must always take a turn on the outside part of his/her track. When he/she takes a turn on the inside part of the track, this is an off-track infraction.
Long Track Speed Skating Rules and Regulations

Long Track Skating: This speed skating form pits 2 skaters against each other, in a timed race to complete a certain distance. Standard distances include 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m (women only), 5000 m and 10,000 m (men only). There are also different racing formats such as sprints, team pursuit, single and marathon. The track is 400 m long and oval shaped. It is divided into two lanes, one outer and one inner with a third interior lane for warming up.

How to Handle Ball Hogs

You meet all types of people everyday. The same rule applies to the sport of basketball. You can meet the greatest of players, the lamest of players, the best shooters, the coolest dribblers and your playing buddies that make the sport great. And at some point of your basketball playing history, you have met the ball hog. You know a basketball ball hog by the way he holds onto the ball for dear life. He rarely or rather never passes the ball. From the moment the ball touches his hands, he is playing his own game of basketball. Rather than passing it to a teammate at the 3-point line or close to the basket, he'll shoot an impossible shot that will never score.

Ball hoggers love to shoot, in fact, most think they are the only people on a team that can shoot and will ignore other free players. They love excessive dribbling and dodging around the opposition but will not pass the ball. Whether it's showing-off, trying to impress the crowd or just an "I'm ignoring my teammates" attitude, ball hoggers are annoying to the extreme. But the rulebook doesn't say anything against it. So how do you deal with a ball hog on your basketball team?

How to Deal with a Ball Hog - As a Coach

Alert the Player about His Hogging Habits
Sometimes a player doesn't realize he is handling the ball too much. Or maybe he isn't alert enough to realize that his teammates are open or in position, perhaps because he doesn't look around enough or at all. Take the player aside and have a quiet word with him about his attitude. Emphasize team spirit and the unity that comes with the sport and how basketball is meant to be played as a team, not as a solo hero running around with the ball.

Remind Your Players "Who's In Charge"
A good player can get cocky with praise and success might go to his head. He might feel he's the one carrying the team and the way he plays, is the way the game should be played. So he may hog the ball, because his playing attitude is "if you want something done right, do it yourself". As a coach, dealing with this attitude is of key importance, as such players will soon question your rules and threaten your authority. Talk to such players firmly but sternly. Let them know who's in charge and who makes the rules.

Emphasize the Right Way to Play During Practice
The way your team practices and trains together, is the way it plays together on the court. So during practice, implement more passing drills and stress the need to pass to the open player. Make your players realize how to be realistic when taking shots. In situations where they can make a shot but the chances of scoring are slim, they need to pass the ball to their teammates. Organize drills where players must pass the ball after sometime, not just dribble and dodge to reach the basket. Another strategy is to carry out no-dribbling drills, where players must pass and play to score. Watch for ball hogs during practice sessions and nip hogging behavior in the bud itself. Praise players for assists and defenses and award unselfish players, who play for the team. Along with keeping score, keep a count of passes and assists as well.

How to Choose the Perfect Tennis Shoes

Stan enrolled his teenage son Jamey for a tennis class. The new coach handed them a list of mandatory sports gear for playing tennis. They spent a lot of time cruising through the mall and bought some new sportswear but fell short of time when they wished to buy tennis shoes. Upon reaching home, Stan went online and bought the best looking pair of tennis shoes for Jamey. The tennis class began. However, a week later, Jamey started complaining of severe foot pain and had to be taken to a podiatrist. Do you feel this problem could have been avoided? Yes, it could have been avoided. Read more to get some tips for choosing the perfect pair of tennis shoes.

For Getting Perfect Pair of Tennis Shoes

Expert podiatrist around the world unanimously say that tennis shoes will always differ from normal athletic shoes. Here is how you can get the perfect pair of tennis shoes.

Understand Foot Type
One of the first and foremost thing to do, is to understand the kind of feet that you have. There are people with either arched feet or flat feet. The shoe designs differ for both feet types. Ideally, flat feet are prone to more foot pain without proper heal support and therefore, shoes for flat feet need to be chosen with care.

Purchasing Time
The tissues in our feet tend to contract during the cooler night times and expand throughout the day on account of blood circulation and climatic heat. This expansion rises by approximately 10% during strenuous activities like running or playing tennis. Therefore, the best time to shop for tennis shoes is usually after you have finished playing tennis for the day or in late afternoons or evenings. This is the time when your feet will have expanded to their full limit.

Foot Sizes
This is again a crucial criterion for selection of perfect tennis shoes. What most of us do not realize is that our feet are dissimilar in size, length and width wise. In such a case, ask your podiatrist or shoe expert to measure your feet before you go out shoe shopping. Now look out for shoes that fit the larger foot perfectly. Often, this tends to be your perfect shoes size. You may also carry along your old comfortable pair of tennis shoes and socks to help you understand how well these new shoes fit you.

Nature of Game
One important factor that helps point out the best pair of tennis shoes is the nature of tennis court that you play on. There are separate shoe varieties to suit hard court players and clay court players.

Shoe Trials
It is recommended that you should try out tennis shoes in a standing position rather than a sitting position. This is because, our feet spread out when they take full body weight than when we are sitting. Also, these trials can be used to get an idea of comfort level offered by a pair of shoes in tennis foot positions like pivoting, cutting and on balls of feet. One should ideally walk or jog around the store to understand if the shoes are comfortable or not. There needs to be a minimum gap of 2 fingers between the tip of your longest toe (usually your big toe or hallux) and the inner edge of the shoe.

Material and Finishing Touches
It is essential that the materials used in making your shoes should be as airy as possible so as to let your foot breathe. You definitely don't want your feet to feel stuffy and sweaty after a long game. Put in your hand inside the shoes and watch out for some rough inner edges and prominent seams that are likely to cause shoe bites. You definitely want to avoid nursing a bad shoe bite after spending so many dollars on new shoes! Look out for added features like foot pads and lighter shoe weight.

Go Karts Vehicle Safety Facts

Safety is needed when driving any vehicle, however, off road safety is even more important due to the terrain which the vehicle is being driven over. Taking your vehicle or go kart off road can be a great deal of fun; however, you do not want this ruined by an accident which could have been prevented. There are several different manuals which you can use to ensure that you fully understand the safety issues before taking the go kart off road.

Teaching your children good habits

Taking your go karts off road can be a great deal of fun for the family, and is an excellent way for children to learn the safety side of the activity. Your children will learn, by the way, that you drive and handle the go kart when you are off road; therefore, you must act responsibly at all times. Although you want to have fun, there must always be a safety side to the activity. Go karts can be very fast, and over rough terrain, this can cause accidents.

Safety apparel and equipment

Safety clothing and equipment is essential to protect you and your children in the event there is an accident. Helmets are very important to ensure that your head is protected at all times, both if there is an accident and inside the go kart. If there are roll bars on the go kart, you are likely to bang and bump your head as the vehicle travels over the rough ground. The correct footwear and clothing is also very important; boots, trousers and long sleeves should be worn. Goggles are also advised to protect your eyes from debris and dirt, which is flying through the air.

Driving in the designated areas

Go karts should not be driven on the roads as this can increase your chance of an accident, as people do not expect to see a go kart on the road. The design of the off road vehicle is not sufficient for typical road use and will be a danger to both you and other vehicles. You must ensure that your children understand that they should only use the go kart on designated areas, which are set out for off road vehicles.

Be aware of your surroundings and the terrain conditions

You may have driven the off road terrain several times before; however, weather conditions and the time of year can drastically affect the terrain. You need to adjust the way that you are driving the go kart to accommodate the changes in the terrain. If possible you should not drive in extreme weather and if the weather changes drastically you should stop. Racing around in the mud is part of the fun; however, it can also make it far more dangerous.

Reading the manual

Many people discard the manuals that are supplied with their go karts; however, they can provide some excellent safety advice. Understanding the vehicle which you are driving is essential to get the most from it, and help to prevent accidents. You will be surprised how much information is contained in the manual that you never knew existed. You should read the manual when you first purchase the go kart, however, it can also be helpful to keep it with the vehicle to refer to on different occasions.

Pre-ride inspection

You may have stored your go kart for some time in-between uses; therefore, you have to ensure that it is checked every time you want to take it off road. Regular inspections and maintenance will guarantee that the go kart is kept in the best possible condition. Teaching your children basic maintenance and pre-ride inspections will help them to learn more about the go kart. They need to appreciate that there is more to the go kart than simply jumping in and driving. Safety is a huge issue and can help to ensure that no one gets hurt.

How to Practice Jiu-Jitsu at Home

Jiu-Jitsu came into existence some time around the 20th century. The Brazilian people adapted the Japanese martial art form Jujutsu and Americanized it; this Americanized form is called Jiu-Jitsu. The best part of Jiu-Jitsu is that it allows even a 100 pound person to defend himself or herself against any person or persons. Jiu-Jitsu is not about strength - or let's say it is not only or mainly about strength; Jiu-Jitsu is a technique, an art. Even a seemingly supple and slender individual can choke you to death if he/she has learned and perfected Jiu-Jitsu. You watch a Jiu-Jitsu combat or championship, and you begin to believe that it takes mind over might to win.

Jiu-Jitsu is based more on using leverage, joint-locks and choke holds. Now there is no way you can practice joint-locks or choke holds on your own! So the question remains - how to practice Jiu-Jitsu at home? Well, it's not so difficult. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you practice and perfect Jiu-Jitsu.

Where to Practice Jiu-Jitsu at Home?

You need to have ample floor space to practice any martial art form, including Jiu-Jitsu properly. It would be best to practice it in open air - in a garden, or a garden patio, canopy or gazebo. You can even practice Jiu-Jitsu in the garage if you have enough of free space. This is necessary in the initial stages - till you perfect your technique. If you are learning Jiu-Jitsu as a combat sport, you will be given ample space in the championship as well. But if you plan to learn Jiu-Jitsu more as a form of personal defense then remember that even if you practice in a spacious place, you may have to use your Jiu-Jitsu technique to defend yourself in a confined space as well, or when you are cornered. I do not mean to scare you, but it is better to be prepared, right? So make sure you perfect your technique.

How to Practice Jiu-Jitsu at Home?

Learn Right
The first and foremost step to perfecting the art of Jiu-Jitsu is to learn the technique right. This means paying full, undivided attention during the training sessions. Absorb the technique, and understand the logic and science behind it. Studying the human anatomy will also help you learn about the weak points in the body and how you can use these to your advantage. Take your classes seriously.

Pair Up
Like I said before, it is difficult to practice Jiu-Jitsu on your own. While practicing Jiu-Jitsu at home, make sure you pair up with someone who knows Jiu-Jitsu. It would be a good learning experience if you can pair with someone who is more experienced in the art than you. Their experience would have taught them a lot more about combat than what you learn in a class. However, you can even pair up with your Jiu-Jitsu buddies so that you can learn and practice together.

Switch Partners
Most martial art forms also try to train the student to read the opponents body language so that you can predict his/her moves and act on them. This is why practicing with the same person for a very long time can limit your skills as a Jiu-Jitsu student. Make sure you switch your partner once in a while. Even if four of you decide to practice together, each will get a chance to practice with three different partners. Good enough.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall
It would be perfect if you could practice in a room with mirrors. This is so because you can observe how different parts of your body move, how they work together to give you a strong and perfect choke hold or joint-lock. Studying this will help you perfect your technique, which will go on to improve your Jiu-Jitsu. You can get a huge top to bottom mirror fixed on one of the garage walls. It will be perfect.

Make it Complex
If your only motivation to learn Jiu-Jitsu is self-defense, you are going to be tested for your technique in tricky situations! So why not be prepared? Challenge yourself and your combat partner by making things slightly complex - defending yourself when cornered, when the opponent is armed, etc. Stretch the limits and take your skill to new levels.

A Word of Caution

Do not get over ambitious with your practice. Make sure you rest enough between practice sessions, eat the right kind of food, drink enough water, and do not tire or wear yourself out. Consult your trainer about what kind of diet you should follow, what your sleeping hours should be, if there are any food products you should avoid, etc. Consult a physician as well. In case you start to feel any kind of pain, do not push the limits or try to be brave and overlook it - tend to it immediately. Play it safe.

Weren't those some easy steps to practice Jiu-Jitsu at home? Hope you become a skilled Jiu-Jitsu practitioner! All the best!
